Pebble Mine—Return of the Beast

By Brad Josephs · On June 21, 2017

As I make the long journey north right now back to Alaska to guide grizzly trips for Natural Habitat, I think about last year. I can’t wait to see my favorite brown bear sows and their cubs, who will have grown so much since last August. I also can’t wait to see if the wolves have returned to the same old den site. I look forward to that feeling of euphoria, watching a quiet meadow at 8:30 p.m. fill with wild bears, just as the day trippers have gone back to Homer and the light starts to get really nice.

There is one thing that I won’t be able to do that was fantastic last year—celebrate with each of my small groups the profound sense of relief that the people of Alaska were feeling after the U.S. EPA had all but shut down any chance for the dark devil of our nightmares, the Pebble Mine, which would likely destroy one of the most valuable and precious river drainages on Earth. Since then, President Trump’s administration has not only intensified the slaughter of Alaska’s bears and wolves, but also plans to prevent the EPA from protecting one of the world’s last great wilderness areas from what would be the largest open-pit gold and copper mine in the world.

So, what can we do? Sign and share the petition to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine! In the current political atmosphere, it may seem like not much of what folks like us have to say will be heard, but we have to try. Please support World Wildlife Fund as they stand by the correct decisions that the EPA previously made.

Stop the Pebble Mine to Protect Alaska's Widl Bears

I would hate to look back in 10 years and wonder what we could have done to stop yet another demolition of nature for the sake of profit and greed.
