Borneo Highlights- October 2022 Night Photography

Last month I guided yet another fantastic Natural Habitat Adventures expedition on the wild and exotic island of Borneo. Below I will share highlights of wildlife photographed at night. I never use a flash when photographing wildlife, because I believe it too intense for the animal, and is also disruptive for non photographers, or people shooting video. Instead we use low intensity LED lights, and operate our cameras to utilize techniques to maximize low light gathering. This type of photography is not easy, but I love the results, and feel that we minimally disturb the wildlife.

Since I began guiding in Borneo in 2015, this is the best Buffy fish owl image I have ever gotten. The eyes of this nocturnal fish-eating owl are absolutely stunning. Image taken in the mangrove swamps of the Kinabatangan River.

David Bowie huntsman spider. Heteropoda davidbowie was first described by Peter Jäger in 2008, based on a specimen collected by G. Ackermann in 2007 in the Cameron Highlands of peninsular Malaysia. The species name honours David Bowie, with particular reference to songs such as “Glass Spider” (from the 1987 album Never Let Me Down), as well as the 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and the resemblance of the frontal view of the spider to the singer’s painted face in his early career.” –wikipedia

Beautiful snail in the Danum Valley, which hosts the greatest snail diversity on earth.

Estuarine or saltwater crocodile in the Kinabatangan River. These monsters can grow to a length of over 20 feet and weigh up to 3,000 pounds. They do pose a threat to humans who venture into the rivers.

Calugo, or flying lemur. It s not related to lemurs or other primates, but are in their own distinct family Dermoptera, meaning skin flier. They possess the largest skin wings ( patagium) of any mammal, allowing them glide huge distances between trees.
