Watch Recorded Webinar- Photographing Borneo’s Nocturnal Rainforest Dwellers

By Brad Josephs · On February 28, 2021

On Nat Hab’s Borneo expeditions, our days are filled with observing amazing megafauna including sun bears, pygmy elephants playing in the Kinabatangan River, and orangutans carousing in the verdant canopy. Then, when darkness falls and night sounds fill the humid air, the jungle comes alive with a whole different cast of characters. That’s when I find some of my favorite Borneo photography opportunities—capturing the creatures of the night, from rare, primitive primates like the tarsier and loris, with their round, wide eyes, to the spectacularly colored harlequin flying frog, and much more. In this webinar I show how to get riveting images of nocturnal wildlife, with techniques you can use in other nighttime rain forest settings, too.

One of the many, many amazing species of primates that inhabit the wild Borneo rainforests is the Western Tarsier. This softball-sized, very primitive primate uses its enormous eyes to navigate the lower canopy at night in search of insects.

The buffy fish owl, with its stunning yellow eyes, can be found along rivers and streams hunting fish.

slow loris sepilok
We found this curious loris in a tree at Sepilok. He appeared to be chewing the bark, and licking sap from the branch! These are the world’s most primitive primates.

I have special lights which illuminate only the exoskeleton of scorpions.

This jade tree frog (Rhacophorus dulitensis) one of the most beautiful frogs I have ever seen. What makes it most special is what happens with some backlight. This is another species of flying frog.

Check out the translucent jade tree frog! wow!.

harlequin flying frog, image of borneo frog,
This gorgeous harlequin frog is a glider. Its toes are heavily webbed and used to glide from tree to tree!

Thanks for tuning in guys! Keep exploring, Brad
